Image looks good when printed, but poor on the monitor

There are two possible reasons for this. First, your monitor may be set to display 256 colors or less while the original data has more than 256 colors. The high color setting is 65,000 colors or more on Windows or 32,000 colors or more on Macintosh. In this case, set the number of colors to exceed 65,000 on Windows and 32,000 on Macintosh.

Second, the monitor may need to be calibrated. To calibrate your monitor, first set the monitor to the high color setting. Then restart the computer, open Photoshop, choose Color Settings from the File menu and click Monitor Setup. Use the dialog box to calibrate your monitor.
